Why does mental performance decline in old age? Research into the underlying mechanisms is complex and can now be continued.

The Research Training Group 2413 "SynAGE - The Ageing Synapse - Molecular, Cellular and Behavioural Mechanisms of Cognitive Performance Decline", established by scientists from Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, LIN and the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in 2018, will continue to be funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) with a total of 6 million euros until the end of 2027.

The research and qualification programme enables a total of 28 doctoral students from the natural sciences and 28 medical students to complete their doctorates at a high professional level in the neurosciences.

The interdisciplinary research approach of the expert group focuses on the mechanisms of "healthy" synaptic ageing and provides the doctoral students with knowledge of state-of-the-art molecular biological, biochemical, behavioural and imaging methods in 14 interdisciplinary projects.
