How does the brain learn? What enables it to adapt, to store experiences and to constantly reinterpret the world? These questions shaped the scientific work of Prof. Dr Henning Scheich (1942–2025), founding director of the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology in Magdeburg.

In his honour, the LIN is organising the scientific symposium “Understanding the Learning Brain” on 10 November 2026. The focus is on the learning brain. Henning Scheich described learning as a process of restructuring: slow, vulnerable and accompanied by pauses and errors. This idea forms the starting point for the symposium. People who accompanied him on his journey, international guests and young researchers will come together to honour Scheich’s scientific legacy and, at the same time, to explore how his ideas continue to influence our thinking today.

The programme includes scientific sessions, opportunities for personal exchange and a panel discussion with the authors of the manifesto “Eleven Leading Neuroscientists on the Present and Future of Brain Research”, published in Gehirn & Geist in 2004.

Participation is free of charge. The conference language is English. Registration is now open.
